Where does the Garbage Go? (Ages 5-9)

Descriptive story about garbage and recycling starts with way things used to be and moves on to recycling, incineration and landfill and their related issues.

A River Ran Wild (Ages 6-9)
Author: Lynne Cherry

Describes the ecological history of a river from 1500’s until today and how people of diverse backgrounds (descendants of European settlers, Native Americans) joined together to fight pollution and restore the health and beauty of the Nashua River and its environment.

The Great KaPok Tree: A Tale of the Amazon Rainforest (Ages 6-9)
Author: Lynne Cherry

The story tells of a man chopping down a tree in the rainforest. He stops and takes a nap and the inhabitants of the rainforest come down and tell him of the importance of their home. Good descriptions of the native wildlife, great illustrations.

Tree of Life: The Incredible Biodiversity of Life on Earth (Ages 9-12)
Author: Rochelle Strauss

Describes the 5 kingdoms of the scientific classification (with examples). Discusses habitat loss and its effect on biodiversity, how you can protect the environment. Excellent illustrations.

 

MAGAZINES

Canadian Journal of Environmental Education
Referred journal with articles researchers, teachers, scholars and post-secondary students, published once a year.

EnviroZine – Environment Canada’s On-line Magazine
This on-line magazine touches on hot topics, Youth Pages, games with facts. They keep a directory of past issues with respect to youth, lots of links to youth orientated web sites.

This is a listing of films available in many formats on a wide range of topics. We are directing you to the K-8 Science section.

Living Earth
This film looks at the relationship between the sun and the earth in terms of life, as we know it. It also discusses the differences between the seasons, renewable and non-renewable energy sources.

Library Video Companion
This site has hundreds of videos (and DVDs) on a huge variety of topics. Choose either by subject matter (for example global warming) or by searching for key words. Narrow down your choices by selecting the grade level. Everything from Bill Nye the Science Guy’s Pollution Solution to documentary style productions from Discovery Channel is here.
For the little folks there are even live action videos of garbage truck tours with Winky and Blinky.
